Engaging With Industry

Oftentimes, faculty experience a multitude of frustrations navigating the university protocols and policies pertaining to industry engagement.  ICIC is here to help!

Most faculty think of industry support as either sponsored research or gift, but did you know that there’s a third mechanism?  The concept of fee-for-service is not new; however, few in academia have taken advantage of the opportunities that it offers or realize the potential impacts that it may have in bringing new technologies to the market.

Fee-for-Service

  • Ideal for industry practitioners seeking goods and/or services that do not constitute as research activities (e.g. materials testing, modeling, device fabrication, equipment rental, etc.)
  • Deliverables and scope of work are clearly defined in a straightforward, standardized fee-for-service agreement
  • Client owns all deliverables — no concerns with IP
  • Client controls publication rights to testing results or products

Sponsored Research

  • Ideal for industry practitioners looking to collaborate with UCLA faculty on research
  • Agreements are often complex with terms that clearly define the scope of work, budgets, milestones, deliverables, and intellectual property
  • Generally subject to the full federally negotiated campus facilities and administrative (F&A) assessment, currently at 57.5%

Gift

  • Ideal for industry practitioners looking for an obligation-free method to engage with UCLA faculty and students
  • No contracted deliverables or intellectual property access
  • No indirect cost assessment
  • One-time administrative gift services charge of 6.5%
  • Gift is tax-deductible
